The Supreme Court Decides to Establish a Division of the Civil Court in HulhuMale’

The Supreme Court of the Maldives has decided to establish a division of the Civil Court in HulhuMale’.

A declaration issued by the Supreme Court stated that the decision was reached by the Council of Judges of the Supreme Court at a meeting held on 12 April 2016.

The declaration stated that the provision of justice within a reasonable time is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution of the Maldives and that the decision to establish a division of the Civil Court in HulhuMale’ was taken with the objective to strengthen civil justice in the Maldives and with the view to establish a judicial system more conducive to the country’s rapid economic and social development.

According to the declaration, judges to the division will be designated from the judges appointed to the Civil Court and the appointments will be made by the Supreme Court in consultation with the Civil Court.  Administrative aspects of the division will be handled by the Civil Court according to established procedures.
